I read this post by Douglas Farah the other day, and couldn't help but hear Phil Hartman say, "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I'm just a caveman, your world frightens me.."
The idea that this pre-modern personality is sitting back on his safehouse chaise and fussing over his relevancy just smacks of post-modern analysis. Now, I'm not saying Farah is right or wrong here. For all I know, Bin Laden is some preening narcissist who does worry about whether al-Shabbab cares about him. However, the idea of Bin Laden pondering his relevancy just seems odd when you consider the fact that he has the full might of American military power attempting to kill him these past eight years.
He's not a metrosexual, folks. He doesn't get his nails done, and he's not toking some weed, looking up at the stars, and thinkin' about God and the universe and stuff. He's more "average medieval cleric" than "unfrozen caveman lawyer."
He used to be a wealthy, pampered jetsetter, but now he's the new Old Man of the Mountain.
